Your CIBIL score is a three-digit number between 300 and 900 that decides whether you get a loan, how much you get, and at what interest rate. A score of 750 or above is the threshold where banks start treating you as a low-risk borrower and offer their best rates. Here is how to get there in about 90 days.

What a 750+ Score Actually Unlocks

  • Faster loan and credit card approvals, often instant.
  • Lower interest rates, which can save you lakhs over a home loan.
  • Higher credit limits and better card offers.
  • More negotiating power with lenders.

The gap between a 700 and a 780 score can mean a difference of one to two percent on your home loan rate. On a large, long loan, that is a very real amount of money.

What Actually Moves Your Score

Five factors drive your score, and they are not equally important:

  • Payment history (about 35%) — do you pay on time, every time?
  • Credit utilisation (about 30%) — how much of your available credit limit you use.
  • Length of credit history (about 15%) — how long you have had credit.
  • Credit mix (about 10%) — a healthy blend of secured and unsecured credit.
  • New enquiries (about 10%) — how often you apply for new credit.

Notice that the first two factors together control almost two-thirds of your score. That is where your 90-day effort should go.

The 90-Day Plan

Days 1 to 10 — Audit. Pull your free CIBIL report and read it carefully. Look for wrong entries, loans you closed but still show open, or accounts that are not yours. Errors are common and they drag your score down.

Days 10 to 20 — Dispute errors. Raise a dispute on the CIBIL website for anything wrong. Getting a single incorrect default removed can lift your score by dozens of points.

Days 1 to 90 — Pay every bill on time. Set auto-pay for at least the minimum on every card and loan. A single missed payment can undo months of progress.

Days 1 to 90 — Crush your utilisation. Keep your credit card usage below 30% of your limit, and ideally below 10% just before your statement date. If your limit is Rs 1 lakh, try to keep the balance under Rs 30,000.

The Credit Utilisation Trick Nobody Explains

Your score is calculated on the balance reported on your statement date, not on what you eventually pay. So even if you clear the full bill every month, a high statement balance still hurts. The fix: pay down the card a few days before the statement generates, so a low balance gets reported. This one habit can move your score meaningfully.

Mistakes That Keep You Below 750

  • Closing your oldest credit card. It shortens your credit history and can lower your score. Keep old cards active with a small recurring spend.
  • Applying for many loans or cards at once. Each hard enquiry dings your score. Space out applications.
  • Paying only part of the bill. Carrying a balance builds interest and keeps utilisation high.

How Fast Will It Update?

Lenders report to the bureaus roughly once a month, so changes show up in 30 to 45 days, and the full effect of three clean months lands right around the 90-day mark. If you start with a genuinely poor score because of past defaults, it may take longer, but consistent behaviour always wins in the end.

You cannot fix years of credit history in a week, but 90 disciplined days can move you from rejected to approved.
